O, I really wished it came down to this. What those watching at home didn't know was that if I did out-sprint Brian, he would still be a good 1:29ish ahead of me, but whatever they can do to make the race more exciting. Nonetheless, I finished 3rd after a delightful 2 hours and 22 minute ski.
Now let us jump forward past a relaxing Christmas to Under-23 trials at Valcartier, Quebec (Jan 9 - 12). With just two days to go before the 30km, a cold made its way into my body and decided to set up shop. A decision was made by coach and I to sit out the next couple races to recover and give it my best for the 15km classic on the 12th. I went from athlete to spectator for the next few days, watching the pursuit and sprint races eagerly to see who was going to Europe. Come race day the body was feeling better (all but the ever flowing mucus) and my high-end speed felt easier (sort of like driving on the highway in 5th rather than 4th I guess). The 3x5km course was to my liking (hills) and after playing some cat and mouse I ended the race in 5th, 9 seconds from top U23 and the automatic ticket to the champs. It would now come down to a Force Majeure, which made for an uneasy 24 hours of waiting for "The Phone Call". Although two grape vines indicated that I made the trip the day of the race (really!?) I got confirmation that I would be going to U23's the next day.
So where does this put me? I am in Canmore now and will be flying to Zurich, Switzerland on the 13th, training at the race site in Hinterzarten, Germany in preparation for the 30km pursuit and 15km classic with a brief stop in Livigno, Italy to hit up the sweet deals on wine. And sugar.
*Of note: Hinterzarten, Germany is in close proximity of The Black Forest. The relevance? This region of Germany is the birthplace of authentic Black Forest Gateau. Unlike the supermarket stuff, the real deal has up to six uniquely different layers, and kirsch. Being this close to The Black Forest and not eating its cake would be like going to Universal Studios and not riding "Jurassic Park - The Ride".

Just so were clear.
